According to Ayurveda our bodies are made up of three basic elements (doshas) called vata, pitta and kapha. Everything in the universe including our doshas are made up of five elements called earth, water, fire, air and space. The dominant dosha determines our constitution ( prakruti ) or body type. According to our constitution; our diet, physical characteristics, sleep pattern and personality changes. Our constitution also determines our susceptibility to different diseases. Diet, medicines and therapies offered to us also change according to our body type. This is the reason why we give so much importance to constitution diagnosis in Ayurveda.
